Collins Essential Atlas of the World
Published in Paperback by Trafalgar Square (February, 1999)
Average review score:

A little gem in its classCompiled from the outstanding digital databases of Bartholomew, this first edition Essential Atlas of the World by Collins is arguably setting a new standard for printed world atlases. In a contemporary world coverage, where Europe finally gets what it deserves: only about one fifth of the plates, this release offers an extremely accurate and detailed view of our world at the end of the twentieth century. The fonts are appropriately chosen and make the plates highly legible. Although the Collins atlases have lost their identity in terms of typefaces and names density, color usage is still old-fashioned Collins. The index offers about 45,000 entries, which is considerably more than the index that atlases of comparable sizes offer (about 32,000). This is all the more amazing since the price is quite afforable for what it offers: It is a good buy indeed, at the cost of it being merely a paperback release. This gives the atlas a somewhat cheap appearance at first. Don't be fooled - this is one of the finest atlases available today in its class, full-grown to match the fame of the Times atlases.

Collins Gem Spanish Verb Tables and Grammar
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (July, 1995)
Average review score:

even if you don't know it--it's indispensable!Extraordinarily handy little booklet. While in the beginning-intermediate stages of learning Spanish, I carried it in my breastpocket at all times. At the start, I went through the discussion and examples--that's the best part of the book, the to-the-point examples--not really understanding everything, but getting a good overview. As I worked through other sources and got better, the book became indispensable for its clear treatment of, first, the basic grammatical structure, and, second, irregularities and idioms that commonly arise.
If you're serious about learning Spanish, this book will make the experience much more productive and quick. If you already know some, you can go from "understandable" to "correct and almost fluent" by reviewing with this book.
Really, a must-have.

Collins Guide to Scots Kith & Kin: A Guide to the Clans & Surnames of Scotland
Published in Paperback by Collins Celtic (November, 1998)
Average review score:

Genealogy GemThe Collins Guide to Scots Kith & Kin is packed with all the information you need to find out if you are descended from one of the Scottish clans, or a sept of a Scottish clan. It is cross-indexed so you can look up surnames easily and find out when and where the surname lived in Scotland. A large, color fold-out clan map shows where the various clans lived. The clan location on the map is also included in the surname index. Because of its accuracy and ease of use, even the best kiltmakers have it on hand as their basic reference for tartan selections. There is no better value for your money than this little guide.
There are quotations on a lot of subjects, and they all differ greatly: some make you laugh, other lead you to think. I specially like the quotations that are permeated by ironic wit.
Some are truly remarkable, for example:
* "Ambition": one of the quotations is the answer that Daniel Webster gave, when he was advised not to join the overcrowded legal profession: "There is always room at the top" :)
* "the Army": Henry Kissinger said(accurately and clearly) that "The conventional army loses if it does not win. The guerilla wins if it does not lose".
* "Belief": one of Cardinal Newman ("We can believe what we choose. We are answerable for what we choose to believe") and one of Bertrand Russel (who on being asked if he would be willing to die for his beliefs said "Of course not. After all, I may be wrong").
* Lastly, one on "Boredom" (I could go on copying my favorite quotations forever, but... you should read the book): Warren Austin, on being asked if he found long debates at the UN tiring, said that "It is better for aged diplomats to be bored than for young men to die".
As you see, reading quotations is quite entertaining, and learning from them even more so. If you can buy this book (or ask somebody to lend it to you), you won't have regrets.
